Frieze New York is back for its second edition and the week is action packed with lots of interesting art stuff! We already had the Creative Time Spring Gala honoring Julian Schnabel on April 30th and Tate Americas Foundation’s Artists Dinner on May 8th, which raised $2million in one night with Glenda Bailey and Sarah Jessica Parker as the honorary chairs.

And let’s not forget, the action of this week will be followed by the contemporary auctions next week as well — so no time for rest!

NOT TO MISS – Part of Frieze
Bar Oppenheimer German artist Tobias Rehberger has created a doppleganger of Bar Oppenheimer, his favorite Frankfurt late-night haunt. It is both a sculpture and a bar, so you can be cultured and drunk at once! Hotel Americano, 518 West 27th Street. V.I.P. opening Friday, 8 p.m.; open to the public from Saturday.
Charles Atlas and New Humans Media-dance pioneer Charles Atlas will team up with sound artists New Humans for a collaborative aural experience. Frieze describes the piece as “a poem-like babble of unrelated words.” We’ll see what this means.
FOOD 1971/2013 In 1971 artists Gordon Matta-Clark and Carol Goodden opened a conceptual restaurant in SoHo called FOOD. “Though we consumed food, Food consumed us,” Goodden reminisced in the New York Times. Frieze is reviving the late art haven with a nostalgic and experimental temporary restaurant. Thematic meals will be whipped up by art-chefs Matthew Day Jackson, Carol Goodden, Tina Girouard and Jonathan Horowitz.
Art in Literature Panel Recently contemporary art has made quite an impression on the literature world, playing a key role in novels like Michel Houellebecq’s “The Map and the Territory,” which features Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons as protagonists. How far can writing go in expressing images? Rachel Kushner and Ben Marcus discuss in the panel, “Art in Literature.”
Liz Glynn’s Secret Magic Speakeasy Liz Glynn, whose architectural sculptures reference ancient civilizations, is creating a secret speakeasy behind the facade of an old bank vault. Lucky fair goers will receive a ticket to enter the art bar’s secret door. Be prepared to be served cocktails and be shown magic tricks by odd, talented bartenders.
Joan Jonas Joan Jonas, one of the first artists to include video in her works, will reflect on 50 years of revolutionary artwork. After watching the documentary “Joan Jonas: Study of the Artist With Dog,” we’d say it’s safe to expect an illuminated, playful and enigmatic talk from the feminist icon.
Sunday May 12 at 3.30pm
Santi Moix During the VIP preview, Brooklyn artist Santi Moix will create a wall drawing in person, bringing his organic fairytale murals to the Paul Kasmin Gallery booth.
Haroon Mirza Haroon Mirza‘s piece for Frieze Sounds investigates unheard noises permeating public spaces. The artist will install microphones to pick up the sounds of crowds moving through the booths. Listeners will then focus on the secret rustlings of the art world universe!
NOT TO MISS – ELSEWHERE

Paul McCarthy “Complex Pile”
Paul McCarthy’s “Balloon Dog” Of all the works slated for Frieze’s sculpture park we’re most amped for Paul McCarthy‘s ridiculous “Balloon Dog.” While images of the gargantuan 80-foot-high work have not yet been released, we’re imagining a combination of Jeff Koons’ dog and McCarthy’s giant poop installation in China.
Jeff Koons x 2 Missed the Jeff Koons opening at David Zwirner on Wednesday? Don’t worry, here is your second chance with a dueling show at Gagosian Gallery.
