Attilio Codognato is a famous Venetian jeweler and art collector, and thanks to Christie’s magazine, we take a look at his collection housed in his Baroque palazzo in Venice and learn about it from Mr. Codognato himself. He talks about how he first began collecting, his friendship with Leo Castelli, Ileana Sonnabend, and Andy Warhol as well as his gallery in 1960s which held exhibitions of Fontana, Twombly, Richter amongst others. Quite an interesting character, isn’t he.
Mr. Codognato’s Venetian home has a dynamic mix of contemporary art works shown amongst antique furniture in the palazzo’s historical atmosphere. Here you find works by Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Kosuth, Bruce Nauman, Maurizio Catalan and Gilbert & George placed next to, for example, a terracotta bust of Caesar and 18th & 19th century Italian and Russian furniture. If you are lucky, you might get invited to the party he hosts for the Tate at every Venice Biennial, so one coming up in just a few weeks.
