Hoxton Art Projects of London just completed their first art project in Turkey, choosing artworks for display at the soon to open Duke Restaurant in Istanbul. HAP’s selection includes a large scale hanging sculptural work by Japanese artist Hirofumi Isoya, four installations by British artists Elaine Mullings and a series of black&white documentary photographs by the French artist Thierry Durand; all exploring the theme of light and dark. According to Hoxton’s statement, the concept behind this project “was to reference the best of British art, each artist having studied at top art schools in Britain including the Slade School of Art, UCL, and Goldsmiths College.”

For this commission, Elaine Mullings, who received her MFA from Slade in 2011, created a work comprising of over 2,500 geometric aluminum objects that reference the movement and shape of mocking birds in flight.

As for Hirofumi Isoyas, he originally received his degree in Architecture then in Inter-Media in Tokyo, then moved to London to join Goldsmiths MA course in Fine Art. His work reflects his architectural background, with characteristics such as clear geometry of structures and graphical purity of lines. For the Istanbul restaurant, his hanging sculpture comprises of an LED light base that sends a flood of light over insect and butterfly shapes that hang from gold and silver chains.
